Craft Beer-of-the-Month, Mar 2018

Deschutes Brewery is a craft brewery founded in 1988 as a brew pub in Bend, Oregon, USA, known for such products as Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale. In 2008, the brewery opened a second pub in Portland’s Pearl District.

Deschutes Obsidian Stout is a deep, robust and richly rewarding beer that is easy to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt, and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

ABV 6.4% / IBU 55 / Oregon

“Deep, rich, delicious stout, full of dark, dark chocolate, roasted malts, anise, and veins of black cherry and currant. Milk chocolate floats around the periphery, but the hops cut the sweetness with an abrupt bitter finish, followed by a dry, cocoa-dusted flavor. Pours brown-black with a brief tan head and modest lacing. Mocha and roasted malt on the nose. Medium-bodied for a stout, but creamy and way too easy to drink.”
